Oakville Little League Set to Host Little League District Championships

Oakville Little League will be the host of the 2014 Minor (10U) and Major (12U) District Championships at Cornwall Park from July 5th – 11th.

The District Championship play downs are the start of the Little League tournament season where teams across their Districts play for the right to represent their District at the Provincials. In the Major division, the winner of the Provincials advances to the Canadians representing their Province for the right to represent Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport Pennsylvania.

The Minor and Major Districts typically are hosted by separate leagues within the District. This year, the leagues decided to award Oakville the opportunity to host both the Minor and Major Districts which will be played during the same week at Cornwall Park where Oakville has two prestigious diamonds.

2014_District_Championships_web“We are delighted to be hosting the Minor and Major Districts” said John Sweeney, President of Oakville Little League. “This tournament provides us an opportunity to showcase the fine young athletes from the seven leagues that make up District One in Ontario, as well as, providing the opportunity to showcase the beautiful Town of Oakville and Oakville Little League.”

“Our objective is to make this combined tournament one that every participating player remembers for a long time” added Steve Bagnell, Tournament Chair. “For many of these young people, competing in this tournament will provide them an experience of a lifetime. Win or lose, we want the players to always remember the time they spent in Oakville in 2014, the fond experience and fun they had, the friendships they made, and the hospitality of Oakville.”

“This event is a major undertaking for our League and can only be successful with the generous support of our volunteers and the Oakville business community” said John Mooney, Vice President of Baseball Operations for Oakville Little League. “We are currently in the planning stages and are looking for volunteers and sponsorship to help support this event.” The league is becoming well known for hosting major tournaments with a focus on putting on the best tournament week for the players.

For 75 years, Little League has been a place for families to come together, enjoy our nation’s pastime and provide a safe, fun and healthy setting for boys and girls to play baseball and softball.
