In 2010 OLL Making Change to Improve Player Skills Development PDF Print E-mail

Oakville Little League is excited to introduce a new division structure for our 5-8 year old athletes starting in the 2010 season. Oakville Little League spent time researching and observing the most successful Little League programs in the province. We have concluded that it is important to start developing the fundamental skills of the game at a younger age. Using this approach, players will realize a significant benefit by developing these fundamental skills as they progress towards the older divisions.

Players 5 years old as of May 1, 2010 will be in an instructional T-Ball division to introduce young players to the sport of baseball.  The emphasis will be on the fundamentals (catch, throw, hit, and run) while having fun with a planned program of activities that change frequently to keep the children active and involved.

Players 6 - 8 years old as of May1, 2010 will be grouped by age and skill level and assigned to T-Ball teams after a 3-4 week evaluation period.  Players will continue to work on the development of all fundamental baseball skills while learning and playing by the rules of the game at a younger age.

** NOTE: In 2010, players that are Little League Age 8-year olds will have the option of registering for a high level of T-Ball or for Rookie Ball. The Coach Pitch division has been discontinued.

 Why T-Ball?Tball

  • T-Ball has 110 balls in play every five-inning game
  • Children at all levels of ability will have more opportunity to field the ball
  • Every batter will swing until they hit the ball

  • This means lots of HITTING, lots of FIELDING, and lots of FUN!!

T-BALL IS THE STARTING POINT FOR BASEBALL

By hitting the ball from a tee the players have the opportunity to develop hand-eye coordination and swing technique without the fear of being hit by a pitched ball.

With a ball being in play with every batter, players in both the infield and the outfield are given more opportunities to develop fundamental fielding skills while placing an emphasis on total team participation and involvement.

WITH A FOCUS ON

  •  SKILL DEVELOPMENT baseball fundamentals and a better understanding of the rules at a younger age
  •  COACHING DEVELOPMENT through a new coaching program that involves mentoring, clinics, ongoing support and a group practice structure
  •  GROUP PRACTICE STRUCTURE to ensure all players work through the same curriculum of baseball fundamentals and rules while minimizing the effect of players being absent
